The team at Vector Group Charitable Trust is proud to spotlight a truly inspiring local organization: Ngāpeke Permaculture. This not-for-profit project is a fantastic example of a community-led initiative that puts the environment and people first.
Ngāpeke Permaculture began in 2018 when the trustees of the ‘Ngāpeke 7’ land block decided to embark on a new project for the property. The first trees for the food forest were planted in November 2020.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
Ngāpeke Permaculture began in 2018 when the trustees of the ‘Ngāpeke 7’ land block decided to activate the property’s potential. Their goal was to create a way of life that works with the environment, not against it, by enlisting locals and whānau (families) to participate.
This project is built on a strong foundation of Indigenous Māori values (mātauranga) and Permaculture Principles. It encourages active participation in māra kai (traditional food gardens) and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment). This approach contributes to the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of both Tāngata (people) and Taiao (the natural environment).
The Three Core Principles in Action
Ngāpeke Permaculture operates under three key principles that guide their work:
Kai Mahamaha – Food Abundance
The project is dedicated to achieving food abundance and security. Their most significant undertaking to date is a massive food forest, with the first trees planted in November 2020. About two-thirds of the forest has already been planted, showcasing a commitment to a self-sufficient food source. You can see their journey documented on their YouTube channel.
Tiaki Taiao – Earth Care
This principle is all about using earth-friendly practices to ensure a positive environmental footprint (tapuwae). Instead of using harmful herbicides and pesticides, they embrace natural methods. For example, they use “weeds” to create mulch and compost, returning nutrients to the soil and benefiting other plants. All their produce is grown thoughtfully, without any harmful chemicals, ensuring it’s good for both the planet and people.
Oranga Tangata – People Care
This extends to the wider community. Ngāpeke Permaculture shares its knowledge by introducing the community to natural gardening practices like traditional māra kai. By sharing these timeless methods, they are strengthening community connections and promoting healthy, sustainable living.
The work of Ngāpeke Permaculture is a powerful testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together to create a thriving, food-secure, and sustainable future. We are so proud to support and admire their mission.
